Helping Others Project and Food Drive

Every year our Hallett Hawks participate in a "Helping Others" project. This year, the ASB selected the Humane Society. They came out and visited our school and brought their friend, Titan, with them. He was our special person's "special helper"!

They asked us to donate pet food and especially kitty litter....the non-clumping kind. If every student at Hallett could bring one can of cat or dog food, we would be able to donate almost 300 cans of food! We have a box in our room to collect our donations.

Another wonderful project we participate in is donating food to the food bank. This is a "high need" time of year. A lot of families are in need, especially during the holidays. They always appreciate whatever we can collect. Again, if you can send anything at all in with your student, it will be greatly appreciated!

Symmetry yrtemmyS

Ok, just having a little fun with the blog title. We have been working with polygons (many-sided figures). When we work with polygons, we learn about flips, slides, and reflections. Reflections brings us to Symmetry. When we look to see if something is symmetrical, there has to be at least one line of symmetry. Things must be exactly the same on both sides of that line. Some figures can have more than one line of symmetry!

Our task....design symmetrical figures. We have very creative minds!

Sentences, Subjects and Predicates, Oh My!

We have been working with sentences. We spent quite a bit of time learning the differences between commands, statements, exclamations and questions. That went pretty well. Now, we have started "dissecting" the sentences. The kids have been learning where the complete subject and complete predicate are. Once they have that figured out, it's time to decide what the simple subject and simple predicate is. This has been a bit challenging. I thought a little "hands on" activity might help. They liked it.
We will be practicing this and starting to work with nouns next week.
